For students seeking an international, interdisciplinary, and high-quality education, Erasmus Mundus offers a unique opportunity. This European Union initiative funds joint master’s programmes (Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters, or EMJMs), allowing students to study at multiple universities across different countries while earning a prestigious degree.

What is an Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters (EMJM)?
Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters (EMJMs) are advanced, integrated master's degrees delivered by a consortium of at least three universities from different countries. Instead of studying at a single institution, students move between universities over the course of their degree, gaining global perspectives and diverse academic experiences. EMJMs are prestigious and highly competitive, offering students a structured academic journey with financial support opportunities.
Each EMJM programme awards either a joint degree (one diploma issued by multiple universities) or multiple degrees (separate diplomas from each participating institution). A defining feature of EMJMs is the international mobility requirement, where students study in at least two different countries to ensure a well-rounded global academic experience.
One of the biggest advantages of an Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters is the availability of fully funded scholarships. These scholarships cover tuition fees, travel costs, monthly living expenses, and insurance, making the programme financially accessible to students from all over the world. Additional funding opportunities, such as Erasmus+ and Promos, may be available for self-funded students.
EMJMs are open to students worldwide, typically requiring applicants to hold a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a relevant field. Admission is highly competitive, with selection based on academic performance, motivation letters, reference letters, and sometimes work experience. Applications are submitted directly to the consortium managing the specific master’s programme.
Each Erasmus Mundus programme is coordinated by a university consortium, often in partnership with industry, research institutions, or non-academic organizations. These programmes are interdisciplinary, covering fields such as social sciences, engineering, humanities, business, environmental studies, and more. Many EMJMs also incorporate practical experience through research projects, fieldwork, and internships with partner organizations.
Since its launch in 2004, Erasmus Mundus has had a significant global impact. By 2024, over 38,000 students had received scholarships, and more than 50,000 students had enrolled in Erasmus Mundus master's degrees. The programme fosters international collaboration in higher education, enhances students' intercultural understanding, and expands their professional networks, leading to strong career prospects in academia, international organizations, NGOs, and the private sector.

How does EMMIR work?
The European Master in Migration and Intercultural Relations (EMMIR) is one of the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s programs and the first African-European-Asian EMJM in migration studies.
Established in 2011, EMMIR is jointly run by nine partner universities across Africa, Europe, and Asia:
Carl von Ossietzky University, Oldenburg, Germany (coordinating)
Ahfad University for Women, Omdurman, Sudan
Mbarara University of Science and Technology, Uganda
University of Nova Gorica, Slovenia
University of South Bohemia in Ceske Budejovice, Czech Republic
University of Stavanger, Norway
University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa
Mahanirban Calcutta Research Group in Kolkata, India
Rabindra Bharati University in Kolkata, India

These institutions work together with a global network of associate partners, ensuring that students gain both academic and practical knowledge that connects directly to social realities and career opportunities.
EMMIR students experience structured mobility, studying in at least three different countries:
Semester 1: University of Oldenburg, Germany
Semester 2: University of Stavanger, Norway
Semester 3: Focus module and internship at one of the partner institutions in Africa, Asia, or Europe
Semester 4: Thesis research and writing, supervised by faculty from one or more partner universities
This mobility structure provides students with firsthand exposure to migration-related issues across different regional and institutional contexts. EMMIR combines interdisciplinary training in social sciences, cultural studies, history, and policy analysis, equipping students with the skills to work in research, international organizations, NGOs, and other migration-related fields.
