Last week, a group of EMMIR Edition 12 students currently participating in their second semester at the University of Stavanger, Norway took their learning beyond the classroom walls by organizing a engaging session with Torstein Bae, Head of Norwegian Outreach at the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC). The event, supported by the Stavanger Cultural Center and Library, offered participants a unique opportunity to engage directly with an experienced humanitarian professional.

During the session, Torstein Bae shared insights into the NRC’s work with refugees and internally displaced persons worldwide. He described the organization's efforts to provide emergency aid, advocate for the rights of displaced people, and develop sustainable solutions for communities affected by conflict and natural disasters. The discussion also touched on the importance of collaborating with local actors to create long-term, community-driven solutions.
In addition to learning about the NRC's programs, participants discussed current events shaping the humanitarian landscape. One topic of particular interest was the recent decision by U.S. President Donald Trump to cut USAID and humanitarian funding, raising concerns about the broader implications for international aid efforts.
The event also sparked conversations about the role that EMMIR students and their future career paths play in the humanitarian sector. Torstein offered practical advice for students considering roles in international organizations like the NRC and shared details about potential internship and volunteer opportunities.
This student-led initiative provided valuable insights into the work of an international organization and opportunities for future engagement. Fantastic job taking the lead in organizing this event!
